Watch Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams in First 'Game Night' Trailer

Watch Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams in First 'Game Night' Trailer

Nov 09, 2017

This week sees the release of a genuine, old-fashioned murder mystery with the Agatha Christie adaptation Murder on the Orient Express. Not far behind, naturally, is the latest comedic take on the genre, Game Night.

Set in the present (unlike examples such as Clue and Murder by Death), the movie seems to be inspired by classic interactive dinner theater experiences where you take part in a fake murder mystery scenario, maybe aboard a river cruise or in a creepy mansion. But the plot involves an all-too-real form of augmented reality for a group of friends during their regular gaming get-together, as this time they have to solve an actual murder.

Mystery comedies work best when they have a great ensemble, and Game Night appears to have value there. You've got Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, both of whom were in the serious political mystery thriller State of Play. They, as well as many of their co-stars, are actors with dramatic and comedic chops, meaning they can be silly yet still feel grounded. That should prove to be the case in this movie.

Watch the trailer below.

Directed by:

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, longtime writing partners who recently made their feature directorial debut with Vacation.

Daley and Goldstein, best known for scripting Spider-Man: Homecoming and Horrible Bosses, the latter also with Jason Bateman, rewrote an original screenplay by Mark Perez (Accepted).

Starring:

Jason Bateman, Rachel McAdams, Jesse Plemons, Kyle Chandler, Michael Cyril Creighton (Spotlight), Billy Magnussen (Bridge of Spies), Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe), Lamorne Morris (New Girl), Kylie Bunbury (Under the Dome).

Official Synopsis:

"Bateman and McAdams star as Max and Annie, whose weekly couples game night gets kicked up a notch when Max’s charismatic brother, Brooks (Chandler), arranges a murder mystery party, complete with fake thugs and faux federal agents. So when Brooks gets kidnapped, it’s all part of the game…right? But as the six uber-competitive gamers set out to solve the case and win, they begin to discover that neither this 'game'—nor Brooks—are what they seem to be. Over the course of one chaotic night, the friends find themselves increasingly in over their heads as each twist leads to another unexpected turn. With no rules, no points, and no idea who all the players are, this could turn out to be the most fun they’ve ever had…or game over." (Via Warner Bros.)

March 2, 2018.
